The Birzman chain wear indicator tool measures wear and stretching on single to 12-speed chains, so that you know when it’s time to replace it. A worn chain causes poor shifting performance and reduces the service life of sprockets and chainrings by wearing down the teeth. Regular checking for chain wear and a timely chain replacement prevent costly premature replacement. 11 and 12 speed chains should not be stretched more than 0.5%. When using aluminium and titanium cassettes, the tolerance is 0.75%, whereas chains on steel and singlespeed sprockets should be replaced at 1% wear at the latest. For precise measurement, the Birzman chain wear indicator tool clearly shows the chain stretch. A practical chain hook on the other side of the tool is a welcome aid to hold the chain when opening and closing chain links.

Für eine schnelle Kontrolle gut, da sich aber keine Zwischenwerte ablesen lassen muss am Ende doch immer noch der Messschieber ranhalten.

Lieber Park Tool CC-4 oder Shimano TL-CN42 nutzen. Die berücksichtigen den Rollen Durchmesser/Abnutzung.

Habe es selbst getestet. Rohloff Kettenlehre (diese Modell hier misst nach dem gleichen Prinzip) zeigt z.B. über 1% Dehnung während das Park Tool Werkzeug unter 0,5% anzeigt (erster Strich geht noch nicht rein).
Dass das Ergebnis von dem Park Tool Werkzeug stimmt, kann man auch mit einem Messschieber überprüfen. 10 Kettenglieder sind neu 127mm.. einfach mal den Messschieber auf 127,7mm stellen (das wären 0,55% Längung der Kette) und außen an der Kette ranhalten ob es drüber oder drunter liegt (z.B. von Pin zu Pin).
Also kurz gesagt diese alten Kettenprüfer, selbst teure von Rohloff, sind komplett nutzlos, wenn man wie vorgegeben bei 0,5% Längung die Kette wechseln will.
