Foam or gel padding?

When riding a bike, micro vibrations caused by uneven roads or trails will reach your hands through tyre, (suspension) fork and handlebar. This constant stress can lead to premature fatigue of your hands. To prevent this, many long finger gloves come with a foam or gel padding on the palm. These are the differences between glove types:

  • Foam padding: Most cycling gloves have an integrated foam pad. It is compressed during shocks and vibrations and offers thus effective shock absorption. Afterwards, the foam returns to its soft, flexible original shape.
  • Gel pads: Even better shock absorption is achieved with gel pads, which can be found in some full finger cycling gloves. These can absorb shocks and vibrations even better. The pad ideally adapts to handlebar and hands.

Full finger gloves for summer

Cycling gloves are a good choice in summer as well. Especially on hot days and during intense tours, your hands might get sweaty fast and slip from the bars easily. Summer gloves are the ideal solution for this. Thanks to their light, breathable technical fabrics, they offer efficient moisture management and thus keep your hands pleasantly cool and dry. What’s more, the material on the palm, which is generally made from a synthetic leather, provides even better grip on the bars. Stay in control in summer, too!

In summer, you need sufficient breathability so that your hands won’t produce excessive moisture or heat. Especially for use in summer, manufacturers therefore produce their cycling gloves with light and airy mesh materials. This guarantees high breathability and perfect ventilation.

Roeckl gloves offer a special feature. Some Roeckl summer cycling gloves have a back of hand made from SunTan material, a tan-through upper material for an evenly tanned back of hand. Ideal to prevent tan lines on your wrists!

Full finger gloves for winter

If you don’t want to stop riding your bike in the cold season, we recommend special winter gloves made from a material that is specially adapted to winter and will keep your fingers and hands warm during tours. It also matters whether you only want to protect yourself from cold, whether you need a wind protection as well or whether you even want to ride on rainy days. Please read here which winter gloves are the right ones for your intended use:

  • Thermal cycling gloves – Classic thermal gloves primarily offer protection from cold fingers and hands. The materials are selected to create an effective barrier against the cold and to offer ideal insulation. Popular materials for this purpose are for example the Primaloft insulation or fleece. The fabrics keep you warm, yet they offer only little protection from wind or rain. Ideal for tours on cool days with good weather.
  • Windproof cycling gloves – Some cycling gloves go one step further and come with integrated membrane. This means that there is a thin plastic layer in the fabric, which stops wind from getting through. Microscopically small perforations in the plastic sheeting, however, allow water vapour produced when sweating to escape to the outside fast. A windproof membrane thus offers the ideal combination of being windproof and breathable. At the same time, a windproof membrane is also water-resistant, which means is protects from light rain and spray. The most popular windproof membrane is GORE WINDSTOPPER. Ideal for tours on stormy days or with light rain only.
  • Waterproof gloves – When you are riding your bike on cold days with unsettled weather, we recommend gloves with a wind- and waterproof membrane. These cycling gloves have a thin plastic layer integrated in their material, which stops wind and water from getting inside. The perforations in the layer are microscopically small and a lot thinner than a rain drop – which allows water vapour created during sweating to escape to the outside. In this way, winter gloves with waterproof membrane offer effective protection from wind and rain and are very breathable, too. Popular waterproof membranes are for example GORE-TEX or EUROTEX. Perfect for tours in unsettled weather!

More features of cycling gloves

  • Slip-resistant silicone prints – Many gloves for cycling features print on the palm that are made of slip-resistant silicone. This ensures safe hold on the bars, brake levers and gear shifters.
  • Hi-vis gloves – If you wear dark clothes only when riding in poor light conditions, you risk being overseen by other road users. Beside classic cycling gloves in black, red, blue and so on, our range therefore also includes gloves in striking neon colours. These hi-vis (short for high visibility) gloves are more visible in the dark and with their large reflective prints, other road users will notice you earlier. This is especially recommendable for winter glove models!
  • Touchscreen compatible – You stop for a second, take your smartphone out of your pocket and just wish to change the song playing ... you really need to take off your glove for it. To avoid this, some long finger cycling gloves come with special threads woven in on fingers and thumbs to allow you using your smartphone. Gloves that are compatible with touchscreens are marked as such in our product texts.
