The right accessories for your roller trainer

The right accessories for your roller trainer

Do you have any questions?

Is my bike compatible with the roller trainer?
This depends on the rear wheel hub width of your bike. Separate axle adapters are required for some axle dimensions if these are not supplied with the trainer. For roller trainers with direct drive, you also need a suitable cassette. Usually, a Shimano HG freehub is pre-assembled, which means that other shifting systems may require different freehub bodies. Details on compatibility are provided by our product pages or, of course, our customer service.
Why are there special roller trainer tyres?
With wheel-on trainers or free training rollers, your bike should have tyres with as little tread as possible. Otherwise it will get loud, uncomfortable and you will be wasting your pedalling power. Special indoor trainer tyres with harder rubber compounds are not a must, but particularly useful for wheel-on trainers. They wear more slowly and slip less. But caution: Such roller trainer tyres are not suitable for the road.
What accessories do I need for the roller trainer?
In addition to any necessary adapters (see above), it is particularly worthwhile purchasing a training mat. It dampens vibrations, has an anti-slip effect and protects the floor from aggressive drops of sweat. A front wheel holder is usually supplied with the trainer. If you want to ride with cycling apps, a tablet or laptop holder is also useful. In addition, many trainers can be upgraded with accessories such as movable feet, incline simulators or fans.
What clothing is best for indoor training?
When training at home, you sweat a lot as there is no wind to cool you down and evaporate the sweat. You should therefore opt for breathable clothing that wicks away sweat quickly. Some manufacturers offer special indoor collections, but a pair of short bibs, a base layer shirt and possibly a sweatband are usually enough to get you started.
You only need a helmet for your first attempts at riding on free training rollers. Dafür können sich Short gloves can be useful to protect the handlebar from corrosion caused by sweat under the handlebar tape.
Which room is suitable for roller training?
As roller training will definitely make you sweat, you should choose a cool room with good ventilation. Alternatively, you can use a fan. Basement rooms are usually ideal for a permanent set-up. They also have the advantage that you won't disturb your neighbours – because wheel-on trainers or free training rollers in particular can transmit strong vibrations into the floor. Smart trainers also require a power connection and stable WLAN.
What is a smart or interactive roller trainer?
With a smart roller trainer, you don't have to control the pedalling resistance yourself. Instead it can be controlled automatically by an app or training computer. This requires a connection via Bluetooth or ANT+, via which the trainer also transmits the generated wattage. All of this takes place in fractions of a second, so that the possibilities range from controlled interval training to real track simulations in which inclines, descents or even the road surface are simulated.
What do I need to train with Zwift?
In order to get started with virtual cycling, you first need a compatible smart trainer, usually a direct drive model. If you have a Zwift subscription or a trial account, download the Zwift app to your device (smartphone, tablet, PC, Mac or streaming player) and connect your trainer directly from the app via Bluetooth or using an adapter stick via ANT+. The pedalling resistance is now automatically controlled by the Zwift app, and the trainer simultaneously transmits your generated wattage to the programme.
Which roller trainers are particularly silent?
Trainers with a direct drive have an advantage when it comes to noise, as the design of wheel-on trainers and free training rollers causes more friction and therefore more noise and vibrations. The latter are especially important for neighbours below you, without you noticing them as being particularly loud. However, there are also differences between direct drive trainers. The Tacx Neo 2T, for example, is considered to be particularly silent as it has a virtual flywheel and the resistance is controlled by an electric motor.
What is the best app for roller trainers?
It depends on how you want to train with your smart roller trainer. Most riders associate the Zwift app with virtual cycling: Here you can follow animated routes with an avatar and race against other users. The Tacx app, for example, takes a different approach, in which the routes are not animated but filmed and therefore particularly realistic. Most apps also offer training plans with interval training; the best-known example for this is Trainerroad. Other popular apps include Bkool, Rouvy and The Sufferfest.
